Virtual Cooking Class: A Melting Pot
Sunday November 8th: A Somali Supper
About the Experience
Somalia has more coastline than any other country in Africa making it a key location along trading routes dating back to the Middle Ages. In addition, it was also colonized by both England and Italy. As a result, its cuisine has been influenced by numerous cultures. In this virtual cooking class, we’ll prepare three classic Somali dishes: Digaag Qumbe, Bariiis Xawaash Leh, and Doolsho. Digaag qumbe is a chicken stew cooked with yogurt and coconut. Reminiscent of a curry, it’s flavored with xawaash, an essential Somali spice mixture. We’ll pair the stew with bariiis xawaash leh, which translates to turmeric rice. To satiate our sweet tooth, we’ll prepare a light and airy cardamom cake known as doolsho. The class starts at 4:00 pm Pacific Time and runs for 90 minutes. Chef Jennifer will walk you through each step, explain culinary techniques, provide cooking tips, and throw in some fun food facts along the way. By the time you shut off your computer screen, a tasty two-course Sunday supper will be ready to serve.
